Bruce’s passion for optometry influences every aspect of his practice, from the thorough care he provides during eye examinations to his personalised lens selection tailored to each patients unique lifestyle needs. The Nicholls family has a longstanding presence in the New Zealand optical industry, now encompassing three generations of optometrists.

After completing his Bachelor of Science degree, Bruce graduated with a Bachelor of Optometry from the University of Auckland in 1992. Following his graduation, he and his wife, Barbara, established their practice in Browns Bay. Committed to staying current with advancements in optometry, Bruce recently obtained his Certificate in Ocular Therapeutics, allowing him to prescribe medications for various eye conditions.

Bruce is highly regarded for his extensive experience and ability to offer effective solutions for complex spectacle prescriptions. His expertise frequently results in him assisting patients from other practices who are experiencing difficulties with their spectacles. Whether this involves fitting problems, visual inconsistencies, or other concerns, Bruce’s skilful approach often helps resolve these challenges. His reputation for resolving these issues and his willingness to lend a hand to others in the industry further highlight his dedication and commitment to providing high-quality service.

To ensure the best care, Bruce has previously trialled new spectacle lens designs prior to their release in New Zealand. By thoroughly evaluating these lenses, he understands their performance and suitability for various visual needs. This hands-on approach allows him to make tailored recommendations for each individual. His expertise and insights have earned him recognition in the industry, leading to opportunities where he has been called upon to present his findings at lens product launches. Through these presentations, Bruce shares valuable knowledge and contributes to the ongoing evolution of lens technology.
The three generations of Nicholls Optometrists began with Viv, Bruce’s father and has continued more recently with his daughter Georgia.

Viv Nicholls acquired his optometry skills during World War II by providing eye tests for American serviceman recovering in Auckland army camps. Following from his wartime service, Viv enjoyed a distinguished 45- year career as an optometrist on Karangahape Road in Auckland, and teaching at the School Of Optometry.

Bruce’s two brothers have also made significant contributions to the field of optometry. Graeme practiced as an optometrist in Tauranga before joining The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ. Bruce’s eldest brother, the late Peter Nicholls managed the largest optical frame wholesaling company in New Zealand for many years.

Outside of work, Bruce is often found with a power tool in hand tackling projects around the house or in the garden. He also enjoys fishing and exploring the many great biking trails around the country with wife Barbara.
